Chris Kluwe, Wade Davis Jr. And Michelangelo Signorile On Gay Acceptance In Professional Sports
Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe, former NFL player Wade Davis, ESPN Radio’s Jared Max and HuffPost Gay Voices Editor-at-Large Michelangelo Signorile joined Nancy Redd on HuffPost Live for a segment called “The Gay Jackie Robinson,” all about LGBT athletes in professional sports.
Kluwe, currently on the cover of Out magazine, had famously written an open lettertaking to task a Maryland legislator who spoke out against Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo for speaking out in favor of same-sex marriage. Davis, now openly gay, is a former player for the Washington Redskins and the Seattle Seahawks, who today works on behalf of LGBTQ youth at New York’sHetrick-Martin Institute and blogs for HuffPost Gay Voices. Max came out as gay last year on his radio program on ESPN Radio.
Much of the discussion focused on the importance of straight allies like Kluwie and Ayanbadejo speaking out, the recent coming out as gay of boxer Orlando Cruz and whether or not we’ll see an openly gay player in professional team sports any time soon.
